Assignment 5: Communication

Why is each situation different, specifically the forms of communication?

The variety of situations often affect how we communicate and when we communicate. In both formal and informal settings it is appropriate to use nonverbal communication, however a formal setting requires more verbal communication as opposed to nonverbal. To keep from specifics, most situations can be set apart as either formal or informal. Formal situations, such as Business Meetings, indicate a higher and more reserved form of communication. Informal situations, such as a party, indicate a lower and less reserved form of communication. While all forms of communication may be appropriate for certain types of formal and informal settings, each setting is different because of the standard expected for each one.

What are the expectations of each person?

People, especially your co-workers, expect a certain reserved nature out of you. When working with them, it is expected that you are friendly, but make no mistake. This expectation is not an invitation to act informally, and is rather an invitation to act formally. Friendliness, for example, is an expectation at both formal and informal settings. As a employee, it is imperative to be friendly towards your co-workers, as it adds a certain fluidity with further communication, both formal and informal. Someone like your supervisor will expect a formal friendship, wherein you are the 'giver' and they are the 'receiver'. While they may 'give' to the relationship, often in the form of compliments/good reviews, it is your main job to 'give' to the working relation by working your hardest all the time.

Discuss several points you will consider when talking to your mentor (supervisor) once you begin your Mentorship:

In terms of Communication, I spoke with my mentor about the best way to reach her within the first day of my Mentorship. I found it to be very important to be able to reach her and 'talk shop' when needed. On the day I started, I made sure to treat the experience as a formal one despite any inclination my new co-workers might give that it wasn't one. I looked everyone I met in the eyes, shook their hands and made a point to introduce myself to as many people as possible. I took notes on Protocol and made sure to always be engaged.
